DISCOVERING AGE MANAGEMENT
Five Years Ago...
Five years ago the realization came to me that I was not getting any younger. This was reinforced by a visit to my doctor's office and being told that I my blood pressure and cholesterol could be lower. Of course being 50 pounds overweight did not help either. Strangely enough the doctor did not comment on my weight which had reached a point where on bad days I could not see my toes.
The doctor asked me to come in again a month later. I did not, as I realized that little would change in a month as I peered down in a vain attempt to see my feet and told my self that I might be overweight but not fat. As I walked out of the doctor's office I vowed that the next time I had a physical I would be in prime condition. Later on that day, after the purchase of a new scale, I found that not only was I overweight but I was obese. Ironically enough a few days ago I had 'admired' myself in the mirror, and told my self that "I might be a little overweight but all in all did not look bad" Of course I was in total denial.
Five years ago I set off to become healthy, my journey has been interesting and led me to discover antiaging medicine. I lost 55 pounds, now have a BMI of 18 and feel that I have been reborn. More importantly I am convinced that the aging process is very much dependent on how we age, and that an antiaging consultation with a licensed health care provider should be part of anyone's health improvement plan. As a result I started to explore the science of antiaging, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) . My journey started off with a series of blood tests that went beyond the 'normal' tests that my doctor had required in the past.
I was was tested for IGF-1, testosterone, DHEA, and more. The results were surprising as I found that like most men my age my hormone levels had dropped off considerably, and explained my lack of drive and lack of libido amongst other things. Not surprisingly my testosterone levels were low, and shortly after being placed on testosterone replacement therapy I felt like I had a new outlook on life.
I am in the process of working on a book detailing my 'travels' as I explore the science of age management but in the mean while I thought I'd share some of my findings on the topic.

When we were young
Unfortunately, statistics show that the youth of America are overweight, do little exercise and eat poorly. Don't forget your family, involve them in your age management and wellness plan and age well together.
The first step to Antiaging - Testing for Hormone Levels
While the quest for youth goes back to the beginning of time, antiaging medicine is still in its infancy. Since age, and the decline of hormones is often not taken into consideration many men and women suffer needlessly because their M.D.'s don’t test for a decline in hormones. As we age this decline in hormones, such as testosterone, progesterone, IGF-1, DHEA, and others may result in a myriad of health problem, these include fatigue, impotence, lack of libido, lack of drive and a general lack of interest in life. Many physicians do not take into account the fact that as we age hormones that are vital to our well being begin to decline. It is the decline in these hormones that are responsible for menopause and andropause. For example, the natural decline in testosterone as a man reaches middle age may be responsible for a decline in libido. Should you not have access to an antiaging physician locally, now through telemedicine, you can consult with a licensed age amangement M.D. who will order the necessary tests to ascertain if you are suffering from a hormone imbalance. It is important to realize that we have a choice to age, or to age well and gracefully.
Your antiaging MD can arrange for a comprehensive blood panels which are available for both men and women. These blood tests are your first step to an antiaging regime that will ensure that you age well and gracefully.
The Antiaging Factor
It is rare for men to be thought of as going through menopause. It is also rare for many women that loose an interest in sex later on in life to seek medical treatment.
This decline in a woman's sexual appetite is often just attributed to menopause and left at that.
A consultation with an antiaging physician is rarely considered or recommended.
Men consume millions of does of Viagra™ a year in the hope that it will stimulate their sexual appetites. One hopes that their medical practitioners have informed them of the fact that if the desire is just not there, then no amount of Viagra ™, Cialis™ or Levitra ™ is going to do anything.
What these men and women don't know is that the decline in certain hormones in their bodies could account for many of the changes that take place at both a physical and psychological level that men and women go through as they grow older. This again stresses the importance of seeing an antiaging physician.
A hormone imbalance could account for a lack of sexual appetite, a problem that has been the result of many marriages breaking up as love without sex is sometimes not enough to sustain the relationship.
A hormone imbalance can cause one to become listless, and easily tired. A hormone imbalance can cause depression, a lack of libido and more. Sadly in most cases these are treatable conditions. I say sadly because when most of us have our routine medical checkups our doctors seldom give any thought to our levels of IGF-1, growth hormone, DHEA, testosterone, progesterone and other vital hormones that can be maintained at 'youthful' levels which will for all intensive purposes slow down the aging process and improve the quality of one's life. These are all factors that an antiaging physician will take into account, but since the science of antiaging is relatively new don't expect a referral from your family doctor.
According to Mintz (2004), for example, it was not until late 1999 "That adult growth hormone deficiency was recognized to be a problem. It was discovered that adults who were deficient in growth hormone suffered from premature cardiovascular disease, reduced bone density, central obesity, decreased muscle mass, depressed mood, elevated levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, slower wound healing, fatigue, poor exercise tolerance and poor immune function."[1]
Again stressing the importance of a regular visit to an antiaging physician.
